Guest Blog Post by Fall CUE Featured Speaker Matt Miller

Have you ever felt like you don’t fit? Like you stick out like a sore thumb?

That was me. When I got into education, I wasn’t the typical education major. I didn’t teach lessons to my stuffed animals and siblings. I didn’t know I was going to be a teacher for years and years and years. In fact, I didn’t even get a traditional student-teaching experience when I was thrust into the classroom for my first teaching job.

Sore thumb. Didn’t feel like I belonged in the classroom. I must be kidding myself. How did I even get hired for this job?

It’s funny how today, more than 15 years later, I still feel that way. I never slipped comfortably into the traditional stereotypical role of the teacher. You know, the “sit down, stay quiet, open your textbooks, complete that worksheet” type of teacher.

That’s probably why I ditched my textbooks. Teaching high school Spanish, I realized that they weren’t helping my students become fluent speakers of Spanish. So I quit using them. Did I have a master plan? Nope! But ANYTHING had to be better than what they were suffering through. (And I was suffering, too!)

Some things don’t change. In many ways, I’m still sticking out like a sore thumb today.

That’s why I am super, super excited to be a featured speaker for Fall CUE 2020. After attending for the last few years, I’ve found that I’m not the oddball at CUE events! I strongly believe that some of the most innovative, creative educators in the world live on the west coast of the United States. And it sure feels like they all attend CUE events!

I love thinking differently about how we teach, how students learn, and how students show us what they know. I’m a big believer that technology can help reshape the way we teach and learn to boost us to the next level.

In my sessions, you’ll find one key thread — ENGAGEMENT. I’m a big believer that learning should be a memorable — unforgettable event! It can help students learn more deeply. And it helps develop that love of learning!

If all of that means that I just don’t fit in with traditional education, I’m OK with that. And I’m willing to bet that you’re OK with that, too.

Ready to stick out like a sore thumb with me?
