Guest Blog Post by Virtual Fall CUE Featured Speaker Carl Hooker

Like many of you, when March hit, I was thrown for a loop when it came to teaching and learning. As someone who works with teachers on a daily basis, I quickly had to not only help them adapt, but also adapt myself.

I’m someone who absolutely loves crowds of smiling educators. I pride myself in putting joy back into learning but also making sure teachers have takeaways from my sessions. One of the first sessions I delivered online was at the Spring CUE event that was shifted quickly to a virtual conference.

I was super excited to find out that they wanted me back for what looks to be an amazing line-up for #FallCUE! Here’s a little bit about myself and what I hope to bring to the table at the event this October.

I’m a teacher. First and foremost, that will always be the lens with which I view my sessions. I always ask myself, would I want to attend my own session if I was a teacher? Setting that high bar for myself means making the content I deliver both engaging and entertaining.

Aside from leading professional learning, I also wear many other hats. I’m a former administrator of a highly successful school district in Austin, TX. I have authored 6 books on mobile learning through ISTE, host multiple podcasts, and even like to have lip sync battles on occasion. I also absolutely LOVE to host virtual trivia nights (something you might even see at Fall CUE)!

My featured session at Fall CUE will be centered around the various strategies we can use to assess students both remotely and in-person. As many educators have discovered, we live in an age where everything is “Googleable.” When learning moved to a completely online environment, that meant now more than ever we need to shift our thinking around what we assess and how we do it.

I hope you’ll join me and the rest of the amazing line-up of speakers at Fall CUE this October 22-26!
